What Is Bilberry Extract Powder?

Bilberry extract is extracted from the fruit of the European blueberry, Vaccinium myrtillus L. This fine powder of deep violet-red colour possesses 15 different anthocyanins, including delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin, peonidin and malvidin glycosides.

Unlike generic berry powders, true bilberry extract has a unique HPLC fingerprint to authenticate identification and purity. This fingerprint is your best protection against common adulterants like mulberry or black soybean husk extracts.

Our powder passes through 80 mesh, homogeneous particle size. It is readily soluble in hot water and suitable for many sorts of compositions. The extract is characterized by a typical fruity scent and somewhat astringent taste.

Authenticity counts when you're designing luxury products. The UV test measures total pigment absorption and generally shows 25% anthocyanins. HPLC gives a comprehensive study and quantification of individual anthocyanins at around 15-18% for the same batch.

This disparity is typical and expected. UV detects all light absorbent substances and HPLC separates individual anthocyanin molecules. Both approaches are useful, addressing different analytical needs.

Verification Protocols:

Please provide HPLC chromatograms showing all 15 distinctive peaks. If malvidin-3-glucoside is present alone or if peaks are missing, you should question the supplier. Authentic bilberry has a balanced distribution of anthocyanins.

FAQ

Q: Why is there a difference between the HPLC result and UV result of the product?

A: UV-Vis is measuring total absorbance of all pigments therefore you get greater percentages (eg 25%). HPLC measures individual anthocyanins and will read lower but more accurately (eg ~15-18% for a 25% UV product). Both approaches are valid for various analytical reasons.

Q: How can I tell whether my stuff is authentic?

A: True bilberry has a particular HPLC fingerprint with 15 different peaks. The absence of any peak or malvidin-3-glucoside as the only dominating peak is an indication of adulteration with cheaper sources of berries.

Q: How soluble is the powder in cold water?

A: Yes, excellent extract is made to be instantly soluble in water, so you will not see any sediment. This makes it ideal for beverage applications and liquid supplement applications.

Q: Is the product able to resist high temperature processing?

A: Stable at low temperatures but degradation of anthocyanins takes place over time at temperatures above 80 °C. We suggest applying the extract during the cooling part of your production process.

Q: Storage requirement, shelf life?

A: Store below 25°C in sealed, light-proof containers due to hygroscopic and light sensitive nature. This normally has a shelf life of 24 months under optimum circumstances.
